This is a pattern called David's Hat, from the website A Boy Who Knits.
I am feeling the need to bulk up my stash of hats and gloves and mittens before it's actually snowing. I used stash wool, my husband picked out guy colors. I don't have a really wide range of colors they'll wear. They seemed to like this though.
